IDGF to teach Malaysian academics how to use Desktop Grid Computing and Applications

On June 11, 2012, Universiti Tekologi Petronas' HPC Service Center conducted a 1 day workshop on Desktop Grid Computing, provided by Dr. Robert Lovas & Mr. Farhan, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in conjuction with ICCIS 2012. The workshop focused mainly on BOINC and Desktop Grid applications. The workshop was aimed at providing the participants with a basic foundation in distributed application technologies in the areas of Engineering & Technology Desktop Grid Computing. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Anang Hudaya, Assistent Head of the HPC Service Center.  Dr.Robert Lovas held a brief introduction on Desktop Grid & Applications followed by a presentation of the Desktop Grid Development Methodology. After this introduction, the  participants were given practical guidance on how to install BOINC Client/Server & on how to connect to the HPC Boinc server,Application Porting & Bridging Desktop Grid by Dr. Farhan. In this way, the participants were taught how the BOINC system is running. At the end of the workshop a presentation certificate was handed to the participants by Dr. Robert Lovas.

DEGISCO DEGISCO

The FP7 EDGeS project has successfully set up a production-level distributed computing infrastructure (DCI) consisting of more than 100.000 PCs from several volunteer and low-cost Desktop Grids, which have been connected to existing Service Grids (including EGEE, SEE-GRID, etc. with about 150.000 processors) based on the new 3G Bridge technology and application development methodology. The main aim of the DEGISCO project is the further extension of the European DCI infrastructure that is already interconnected by EDGeS to International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC) in strong collaboration with on the one hand local partners in ICPC countries and on the other hand European e-Infrastructure experts (including 3G Bridge know-how) and thus, reinforce the global relevance and impact of European distributed infrastructures. The dissemination and training activities promote via various channels such interoperation between Desktop Grid and Service Grid infrastructures on a global scale, which leads to more awareness under the general public of computational science and distributed computing co-funded by the EC. As a result more citizens, students, and companies are expected to donate resources to scientific purposes. As part of these activities the International Desktop Grid Federation is operated allowing for effective exchange of information through participation.
